Legacy Emanuel Internal Medicine Residency Program
Academic education
The Legacy Internal Medicine Residency Program has diverse training opportunities with outstanding faculty that prepares graduates for their future career path as a hospitalist, primary care physician, or sub-specialty fellowship. Legacy Health is a community hospital system rooted in academic medicine and committed to the health of our patients.
Morning Report
Traditional morning report cases occur 3 days a week on each campus. One morning is a dedicated Ambulatory report and utilizes the Yale Outpatient curriculum. They are run by the Inpatient and Outpatient Attending physicians, Chief Medical Residents and the Program Director.
Academic Half-Day
Academic Half Day takes place each Wednesday. Residents are given three hours of protected time to attend AHD and learn fundamentals of medicine. Senior residents attend the morning session and Interns attend the afternoon session to allow teaching targeted to the learners’ needs. We believe learning should be invigorating and fun. Getting everyone together in the same room each week fosters learning and helps build camaraderie.
Clinical Reasoning and Chief of Service Rounds
Weekly with program leadership for practice of diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills.
Internal Medicine Board Review
Intensive board review takes place in the second half of the academic year. Each resident is given access to multiple educational resources to support academic learning, including:
MKSAP board review
- The premier board prep and self-assessment program in internal medicine.
Board review questions
- Review rounds twice monthly with Program Director or program leadership.
Academic half day curriculum
- Focus on board review for senior resident in the spring.
Individualized Board Study plans
- Work with faculty advisor(s) and program leadership to review in-training exam results and help with customizing a study plan.
Board Review course
- Protected time for board review course in spring of R3 year.
Substance Use Disorder Curriculum
Our residents receive formal training in the management of substance use disorder, including the safe prescription of suboxone and methadone. Residents complete an 8-hour online course through Providers Clinical Support System and supervising attending are proponents of maintenance therapy.
Medical Grand Rounds
Our Medical Grand Rounds presentations occur every Wednesday and cover a wide variety of topics. Presentations include Cardiology, Pulmonology, Hematology/Oncology, Morbidity and Mortality, and Autopsy Grand Rounds. Sub-specialists facilitate Grand Rounds talks focused on evidence-based medicine.
Resident presentations are a key component of our Grand Rounds, giving residents the opportunity to improve their presentation skills. Graduating 3rd year residents have the opportunity to present on a topic of their choice. In addition, residents of all years are given the opportunity to present case-based Noon Reports.
Visiting Professors
Through a generous endowment, Legacy Internal Medicine Training Program is able to host visiting professorships. These Clinician Educators offer a unique opportunity for residents and faculty to broaden their experience by making rounds with ward teams, speaking at Medical Grand Round and/or participating in faculty development meetings. Our visiting professor program hosts some of the nation’s best-known physician educators.
Scholarly Projects and Quality Improvement
All residents participate in scholarly projects and quality improvement projects under the guidance of faculty. Each year, residents compete with colleagues from other residency programs in Oregon at the annual Oregon Chapter Scientific Meeting of the American College of Physicians.
