What you need to know

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a new treatment option for prostate cancer. HIFU uses focused sound waves, also known as ultrasound, to heat and destroy cancerous tumors without damaging surrounding tissue, nerves and muscles.

Because doctors can precisely focus the treatment, HIFU minimizes the risk of side effects, such as problems to urinary and erectile functions, to allow men to maintain their quality of life.

HIFU is appropriate for some early-stage prostate cancers that have not spread, or metastasized. It can also be used for prostate cancers that have reoccurred.

Legacy Health is one of the few health care organizations on the West Coast that offers HIFU, which is one of several options for addressing prostate cancer.

One-time treatment with no hospital stay

In cases where HIFU is appropriate, the treatment offers many potential benefits. In addition to minimizing side effects, HIFU is non-invasive and does not require a hospital stay.

HIFU is a one-time treatment that takes from one to four hours. Men who undergo HIFU may also have other cancer treatments.

What to expect

Prior to undergoing the procedure, most men have lab tests and an EKG.

To perform the procedure, doctors use advanced software to merge MRI and other images to locate the tumor precisely and then monitor in real time the progress of the treatment. To deliver the sound waves, they use a probe placed in the rectum.

The sound waves pass through healthy tissue without causing damage. When the sound waves reach the tumor, temperatures rise to 90 degrees Celsius.

After the treatment, patients are monitored for up to four hours. Most men resume their normal lifestyle within a few days.
