The Legacy Clinical Ethics Program

Making health care decisions for yourself or your family is sometimes hard.

The Legacy Clinical Ethics Program can help. We have a team of ethics consultants –– volunteers from Legacy and the community –– trained to address difficult questions in health care.

We offer free consults and advice, aiming to resolve ethical issues by exploring choices in a respectful manner.

We can help

  • Explore who can make health care choices when a patient is unable
  • Discuss how health care choices are made within state laws, Legacy policies and legal rules
  • Explore patient and family preferences as well as cultural and spiritual beliefs
  • Organize conversations between patients, families, doctors and care team members
  • Explain patient rights, informed consent, confidentiality, Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) and Advanced Directives
  • Address stress and concerns among staff, patients and family
