Getting prepared for the big event   

Where should I have my baby? What do I need to prepare? What can I do in advance? What can I expect?

We are here to help you prepare for the birth of your baby. We've information below about our welcoming family birth centers, tasks that you can complete prior to going into labor, such as paperwork and a required list to check-off before baby arrives.

Our comprehensive page has the information to help you have a smooth and supportive pregnancy, labor and newborn experience.

Being prepared: Your checklist   

  • Choosing the place - Take a virtual tour of our Family Birth Centers
  • Choose a provider - If you don't have a provider, find a provider
  • Know where to go - We have campus maps for each of our hospitals. Maps are on each of our hospital pages.
  • Learn! -Sign-up for a childbirth class
  • Forms for your admission - Fill out and submit your pre-registration forms (Forms available in English, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese.)
  • Plan - Use our birth plan to outline your preferences for your labor and delivery
  • Birth certificate - Download and fill out the Oregon or Washington birth record order form 
  • Pediatrician - Find a baby provider (for after your baby is born)
  • Car seat - An installed car seat is required to take your baby home. Randall Children's Hospital offers virtual car safety seat education. Schedule an appointment  
  • Breastfeeding education - Learn about lactation support (if you are planning on breast feeding)
  • Life with baby - Post-pregnancy and parenting support classes

Choosing where you have your baby can be an overwhelming experience. We appreciate you considering a Legacy Health location for this important event. What are the important factors to consider while researching your birth location? We offer the best of both worlds –– a comfortable, supportive place to give birth and advanced medical technology, if ever necessary.  We’re here to work with you and offer you choices in your pregnancy care and delivery.

  • Our comfortable, home-like birthing suites provide a supporting, private environment for labor, delivery and recovery
  • After delivery, your baby stays with you 
  • Access to Randall Children's Hospital Family-Integrated Level IV NICU, if needed
  • We have a Level III NICU at Legacy Health Salmon Creek Medical Center, for our Washington families 
  • Obstetric hospitalists (An OB hospitalist is a board-certified obstetrician who is available at all times in the hospital. They collaborate with your primary obstetrician or midwife as requested, provide in-hospital care for Legacy maternal-fetal medicine patients and provide consultation and back-up for Legacy midwives) at Family Birth Centers at Randall Children’s Hospital and Legacy Salmon Creek.
  • We offer many alternative options, such as nitrous oxide and waterbirth, for your labor and delivery experience. Please discuss your questions with your provider.

Childbirth and newborn classes

Childbirth Preparation

We are now offering a webinar-based childbirth education experience! We want to help you build confidence for the big day so you feel prepared. Our online class is facilitated by Legacy Health educators, offering instructive videos, animations, and discussions. Learn what to expect during labor, birth and immediately postpartum and ask questions along the way.

Comfort and coping for labor

Can't attend a full childbirth class series or just want a refresher class? This webinar is ideal for first or fifth time parents! Practice positions for labor and birth, learn coping techniques and relaxation to help you prepare for your baby- all in the comfort of your own home.

Newborn Essentials and Breast/Chest Feeding Basics - webinar

Learn the basics of newborn care and breast/chest feeding in this condensed online class.

Grandparents Today

This live, online course is highly recommended for all grandparents! Whether you live near or far away from your grandbabies, this class will help you explore ways to welcome your grandchildren and support your children becoming parents 

E-classes

Legacy offers self-learning options for online childbirth, breastfeeding and mother and baby care classes. Trusted education, your way. Learn essential information when, where, and how you prefer from a mobile device, tablet, or personal computer.  

 

Understanding Your Multiples:

Expecting more than one baby? In this E-class, you’ll learn all about the pregnancy and birth process for multiples, ways to prep your family and home, strategies for bed rest, options for birth, delivering in the operating room, NICU stays, and how to breastfeed more than one baby with evidence-based tips from experts. It takes about 4 to 6 hours to complete the class.

Fee policies

Class fees include registration for the expectant parent, a support person and all materials. Your insurance health plan may cover part or all of the cost of this class. Please contact your health plan before attending class to determine if reimbursement is available and to find out how to be reimbursed.

Legacy offers 100% reimbursement of Legacy-sponsored pregnancy and parenting classes for all benefit-eligible employees.
