They are the words you never want to hear, “I am so sorry, but you have breast cancer.” Eight words that can shatter your sense of health and safety and can upend your life and the lives of those you love. When Maija Roe of Hood River heard them in October of 2018, she fearfully wondered what they would mean for her.
Whether you or a loved one has heard these words, it is important to know you are not alone. The Legacy Cancer Institute is a world-class program based here in Portland designed to support your needs.
“When I heard the news I was overwhelmed, a little confused and scared. I had no idea what was coming next,” said the 41-year-old Roe. “When I met Dr. Nathalie Johnson, she was warm, kind, and put me and my husband at ease, reassuring us during a really stressful time. Dr. Johnson shared with me that she is breast cancer survivor and she talked to me more like a friend while explaining what was happening. She took such good care of me and it made all the difference.”
The American Cancer Society estimates in 2019, there will be 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States.
When people with cancer seek care at Legacy Health, they can trust that the treatment they get is rated among the highest in the country and accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. The Legacy Cancer Institute is proud to have earned the 2019 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer for the fourth time in a row, extending its record as one of the nation’s top cancer programs. The Legacy Cancer Institute is the only accredited integrated network cancer program in Oregon and was the first in the nation to receive this recognition from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer in 2001.
