Care for Parkinson's

Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder in which the brain slowly stops producing a chemical called dopamine. The loss of dopamine results in the person having less and less ability to regulate their movement, body and emotions.

Parkinson's disease itself is not fatal. However, complications from the disease are serious and can lead to death. No cure exists for Parkinson's. The goal of the care team is keep the patient’s quality of life as high as possible.

Excellence in Parkinson’s care

Legacy Parkinson's Program offers a specialized clinic that is personalized to help you achieve and maintain an active, high-quality life with Parkinson's disease. Our team of neurologists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, plus a social worker from Parkinson's Resources of Oregon, offer complete care.

This program is uniquely tailored to each patient and may include:

  • Medications
  • Physical, mental and speech therapy
  • Balance training
  • Education and information on research studies
  • Referral to community programs for additional support and resources for self and family

Deep brain stimulation

One of the treatment options is deep brain stimulation (DBS), in which a surgeon places an electrode inside the brain to block signals that cause tremors and other movement problems. Learn about DBS here.
