As someone who has worked in the medical and mental health field, I came to this doctor because he is, from what I've researched, one of the best knee surgeons in Portland. However, his bedside manner and ability to converse/listen to the patient (myself) was a huge red flag for me that I did go back to researching other possible surgeons. I had many questions to ask as he was giving me information extremely quickly that I couldn't fully understand immediately even as a semi medically competent Individual. It felt difficult and burdensome to interrupt. Then after an overload of information and recommendations for surgery, he finally asked "do you have any questions?". As the person who is going to be doing a very important surgery for an active individual, it is important to feel confident as well as safe with the person that is doing the procedure. That being said I was very disappointed with my first appointment and only one before Id see him prior to surgery. I understand surgeons typically don't have the best bedside manner, they're not social workers. I felt most sad for the individuals that may go see Dr. Bryce Bederka and not have the best health, Insurance or possibly minorities. As a young, healthy and educated white female, I was baffled by being berated for disclosing that I occasionally use cannabis. (I know this was important to disclose for some thing such as surgery due to anesthesia.) He told me he wouldn't do my surgery for 30 days of non-smoking before and after. However he did not ask my way of consumption, how often, or any other questions regarding this. He just told me "that's a big problem." So to be completely upfront, I was disappointed in this visit but I am also understanding and aware that he is a well-known surgeon that is respected for his skill.

Everyone was great, nice and help full. They all did what they needed to do and explained everything. My daughter and myself, as we were leaving, made the comment that everyone was so pleasant. I enjoyed the friendliness, and Information I was given.

Dr.Bederka explained my health Issue and his proposed plan to treat my injury going forward in an easy to understand manner using a anatomic model and my MRI. He replied to all my questions in a respectful and informative way.

I felt completely at ease from the minute I walked through the doors. Dr. Bederka was very kind and efficient explained things to me and we talked about past treatment. So good to have an honest answer and to learn that some treatment in the past is no longer beneficial. Had a more thorough exam than in the past. Great choice for a 2nd opinion. Will stay with him for future care.

I thought he was rude and basically said I couldn't have surgery unless I lost weight. He was asking me why I even bothered having a MRI. How do I know? I was just doing what the Dr told me to do. I left his office highly annoyed.. I felt uncomfortable and he was basically saying you won't get any help until you lose weight. So keep getting steroid shots and diet until then.

There was an intern who explains everything in great detail. The the doctor came in and basically repeated everything the intern said and then also told me I may not be able to get the surgeI desperately need because my BMI is to high. He has no idea what ive been through in my life or the fact that I have taken 150 pounds off of my body and I was still losing weight, until I could barely walk anymore, 2 months ago. It was not a personalized meeting between us. I felt like his comment was fat phobic. I also believe all medicine should model the Health At Every Size curriculum. I have had 15 surgeries in my life and most of them I was at a way higher BMI. So for him to say that to me is ridiculous. I know at least 7 people bigger than I am, who have had knee replacements. His comment was uncalled for.

Only bad thing is I was waiting in the doctors room for what seemed like 15 to 20 minutes before someone came in, but that's understandable considering how busy you guys are.

This provider was more interested in hearing himself talk about his own experiences and praising his expertise. He cut me off repeatedly and even though I corrected him three times about a previous surgery for a bone spur removal, he kept saying that I had it removed as a teenager. That was even in my after visit summary notes. I felt as if I couldn't get a word in edgewise. He seemed very knowledgeable and I appreciated that. However his dismissive attitude of what I would be trying ask or explain was very off putting and leads me to believe that I need a second opinion. He spoke disparagingly of the radiologist who originally read the MRI which makes me wonder how he speaks of any of his colleagues and other patients.

Dr. Bederka knows what he is talking about/doing. He is very calming and kind. With this being my second surgery, I wouldn't trust anyone else.
