Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
A unique approach to peripheral artery disease (PAD)
Poor blood circulation in the legs and arms is a common problem, particularly for those over 50. The problem can develop into what is known as peripheral artery disease, or PAD. (It is sometimes called peripheral arterial disease or peripheral vascular disease.)
PAD occurs when the vessels that carry blood to the limbs, brain, stomach and kidneys narrow because of fatty buildup in the inner walls of the arteries. The buildup restricts normal blood flow.
Health issues from PAD
Most people first notice PAD when they feel cramping, fatigue, pain or discomfort in the legs and buttocks. These signs come from poor circulation to the legs, a condition called “claudication.” It can make it difficult to walk.
PAD can lead to serious health issues, such as:
• Leg or foot wounds that are slow to heal, in some cases leading to gangrene or limb amputation
• High blood pressure
• Stroke or heart attack
• Kidney problems
