About Me:

I was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Hillsboro (where my family still lives). I made my rounds around the Hillsboro school district, going at one time or another to Mooberry, Eastwood, Jackson, Evergreen, and Glencoe. I then turned "traitor" and went to college at the University of Washington and got a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology, though I did most of my research in paleontology (dinosaurs!) and fell in love with East Asian and Northern European folklore. After college I spent a year at the Oregon National Primate Research Center and then went to medical school at the University of Virginia and decided to stay a bit longer in Virginia for my residency because I knew once I returned to Oregon that no one was going to pry me away again. I chose to go into family medicine because I enjoyed taking care of the full spectrum, from infants or geriatrics and getting to know patients as a person, not just a diagnosis, and how they feel about it, not just how I want to treat them. I also enjoy working the full scope of medicine from head to toe and working with illness as it affects the whole, not just the organ. I also have much experience from residency working around barriers to care such as cost, coverage, and distance for my patients to ensure they get good care. I plan on in my practice in addition to medicine doing small skin lesion removals, large joint injections (knee, shoulder), and gynecological exams, including IUD placement and removal. While in Virginia I was a member of the AAFP as well as the state Medical Society of Virginia and the local Lynchburg Academy of Medicine. I also enjoyed working in the free clinics in Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Orange County, Virginia. Outside of medicine my interests include vertebrate paleontology, folklore, children's literature (something I picked up growing up in my mother's home child care), hiking, long cruises along beautiful scenic roads like Highway 101 and basketball. And while I enjoyed my time in Virginia and would not trade it away, after 7 years away from the Pacific Northwest I am happy to be returning to my home and setting up roots here all over again. Hobbies include: Hiking, Basketball, Sightseeing

Dr. Chu and his associated minions, MAs, PAs, nurses, etc do a fine job. It has taken awhile to get my past medical history (pre-Legacy) integrated in the system, and so there's been a bit of confusion at times about things like vaccination currency, past treatments, and the need for completion of one assessment or another. The electronic communication process has gotten better over the two+ years I've been here, but much of it still remains less than good, and much of the system initiated communication and auto-generated responses are 'autistic' to put it gently.

Dr. Chu must be popular. It is a while before he has availability, but getting on the wait list has consistently got me in earlier.

  Jun 7, 2024
Dr Chu never touched me, never listened to my heart, lungs, took my pulse, doesn't seem hands on though he does make clear what he is saying.

  Jun 3, 2024
Had previously contacted provider to see if labs scheduled at OHSU were sufficient to satisfy reqs of provider. Front desk replied in affirmative. Provider retracted approval at visit.

I have been waiting months for my appointment. Dr.Chu was wonderful! I was so excited to read my list to him of all my issues. One by one he and I went thru them and discussed a plan of action. I really think he's going to help me have a better quality of life.

  May 20, 2024
I liked him well enough and he addressed my issues professionally.

Dr Chu knows my health strengths and weaknesses and adjusts my meds as a result. Because of him, my blood work has improved more than I ever thought it could. Cholesterol down, A1C down, etc.

Dr Chu and his staff are great and easy to talk to

  Mar 19, 2024
Dr Chu always takes the time to explain what he thinks we need to do to address my healthcare needs. And he likes input from me to insure I understand the direction we are aiming for. He also communicates with my neurologist to make sure any meds prescribed to me are compatible with my anti-seizure meds and stays on course with her healthcare plans. Very caring and puts me at ease knowing that I have a team looking out for the best possible comfort level considering my high maintenance needs. Looking forward to the future and sleep better knowing Dr Chu and the whole team at Legacy St Helens has my back.

All my visits to these clinic are always good and I'm treated always respectfully and expediently

  Feb 12, 2024
He is the most incredible family doctor I've ever encountered. When he walks into the room he wants to know what my concerns are and if I've seen the results of my blood work. We address my concerns, at a very normal pace and in a way that I can actually understand. I can have trouble concentrating for a couple of reasons and have caught him politely pausing at times when I'm having that trouble. I like that he's patient enough to do that. I know he has other people to see. The last part of the exam is when he tells me what is good about the blood work and what might be troubling and offers Solutions and finally asked me what steps I prefer. I really appreciate that I'm included in that final step.

Not certain St Helens clinic is accepting new patients at this time. I feel lucky that I got in with Dr Chu. Never feel rushed, he seems very knowledgeable about all concerns and listens and responds to any questions or concerns.

  Dec 27, 2023
Like most visits, time ifs of the essence, always short on time and feel rushed..segue from that and I feel talked over. But that is in response to lack of time and he has very little time to talk AND listen. So he has to say what he needs to say but leaves not a lot of time for reply or response..again a time issue more than a personality or lack of bedside manner.

I had an appointment for a plugged earBetween the time I made the appointment and seeing the doctor I got a sore throat. Which I mentioned to receptionist when I arrived. She was ok with that, the nurse told me in the future if I'm sick not to come in. Well what do I do if I'm sick ? Google ???? My primary didn't seem very happy I was sick either. I didn't get much of a suggestion on either my ear or sore throat of what I could do for relief other than what I was already doing at home without a doctor. Thank you very little I guess I did miss an appointment a couple weeks before due my elderly mother being in the hospital late the night before my early morning appointmentSorry

  Nov 30, 2023
First time appointment with Dr. Chu. Recommended by a family friend. Very understanding to my medical needs. Ordered labs that my last provider should have been doing every 3 months for my condition (but previous provider hasn't for over 9 months - Providence). Listened to my specific needs and concerns.

  Nov 21, 2023
The staff and Dr. Chu are always great. I have no complaints.

Felt provide had very good concern for my health and well-being.

  Aug 25, 2023
I was able to see my Dr. Because of a canceled appointment. Normally it takes too long to get in. Perhaps you can leave an hour a day available to be able to see patients with urgent needs or to be able to bring in those from the waiting list.

  Aug 7, 2023
I have always been treated well at this clinic.

Realizing I had trouble walking, due to Parkinson's & previous surgeries, they provided a wheelchair & took the time to push me to my next location in the building, for tests, that were done quickly & painless. Excellent care.
