Lymphedema
Special care to reduce swelling.
What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the buildup of fluid in the lymphatic system, which absorbs and transports various fluids in the body. Cancer and its treatment can block or damage the lymphatic system, causing lymphedema.
Legacy Health’s physical therapists and occupational therapists can help you manage lymphedema by working with you to reduce:
- Swelling
- Pain
- Risk of infection
- Emotional issues
We'll also teach you how to keep your lymphatic system healthy to help prevent the condition from returning.
How to treat lymphedema
Our physical therapists and occupational therapists develop personalized treatment plans for lymphedema, including options such as:
- Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), gently stretching the skin to increase lymph flow from swollen tissues to healthy parts of your body
- Wrapping your arm or leg with low-stretch bandages to minimize return of fluid
- Compression garments
- Skin care, breathing and exercise instruction
- Compression pumps, in combination with manual lymphatic drainage
Specialized care convenient locations
Treatment options are provided by licensed physical therapists and occupational therapists who have advanced training and certification from the Lymphedema Association of North America (LANA).
Lymphedema care plans are offered as part of Legacy Rehabilitation Services at Legacy Good Samaritan, Legacy Meridian Park, Legacy Mount Hood and Legacy Salmon Creek medical centers.
