Life-Saving Care for Serious Injury & Illness
Available 24/7 — When Every Minute Counts
Minutes count when a child is injured. And for the most severe injuries, you need a multi-disciplinary team that’s available to come together quickly, as soon as that child arrives. At Randall Children’s Hospital, our expert trauma and surgical care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to handle immediate, and life-threatening, injuries. We provide outstanding care in a child- and family-first environment, with programs and services specifically designed for kids.
Trauma care is handling the most severe needs that come through the emergency room – such as bad burns, car crash injuries, gunshot wounds and organ damage. Trauma facilities are different because of our resources, specifically, surgeons and specialists onsite 24/7.
Led by a panel of experienced pediatric trauma experts, our trauma team includes:
Before a child even arrives, the Trauma Center works to bring a team together to support that child’s specific needs. Our team provides life-saving care in a state-of-the-art resuscitation (first aid given to a patient not breathing or no pulse) area that is just steps away from imaging services and operating rooms, which are all available around the clock and ready in minutes.
We’re proud to be the first hospital in Oregon and the first children's hospital in the Pacific Northwest to receive a Level 1 pediatric trauma center verification from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) – making us one of only 50 U.S. centers of this kind.
To earn this distinction, a trauma center must meet specific benchmarks and metrics. Most importantly, it means that we can offer the most comprehensive and round-the-clock care for your child.
Injuries seen in the Trauma Center are often sudden and life-threatening, which makes both the event and care an overwhelming experience for children. We’re staffed with trauma-trained nurses who are trained and experienced in helping children and families cope with fear and stress while in our care.
Your child is our priority. You’ll be kept informed regarding every decision and when appropriate, be with your child. We know how important it is for parents to understand what is going on during this stressful time.
Once assessed and stabilized, pediatric trauma patients receive comprehensive treatment and recovery at Randall Children’s Hospital, which includes a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), acute care services and the only inpatient pediatric rehabilitation program in the Northwest.
Injuries are the leading cause of childhood death and disability in the United States. Our trauma team’s goal is to never need to treat a child with life-threatening injuries, which is why Randall Children’s Hospital is dedicated to preventing accidents before they happen.
We’ve developed safety programs and education that target high-risk areas for children in our community, like falls, bicycle and car accidents.
Trauma Nurses Talk Tough: Legacy trauma nurses reach thousands of people in the community every year, and help people take control of the risks in their lives. Programs include talking to children and teens about life, bicycle and auto safety.
