Specimen Collection Requirements
Whole Blood in a dark green (preservative free sodium heparin) top tube
Preservative free sodium heparin, dark green top tube, is the preferred anticoagulant. These specimen requirements also apply to high resolution chromosomes and shortened turn around time for neonates. Keep specimen at ambient temperature and transport within 24 hours. NOTE: Newborn bloods must be handled STAT.
Room temperature within 24 hours of collection
Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: Suboptimal, call Cytogenetics Lab at (503) 413-4613
Clinical information including the indication for study must accompany the specimen. This includes a detailed list of congenital abnormalities, reproductive history with known carrier status for genetic conditions. Cytogenetics requisitions are available upon request. Call Client Services for assistance with specimen transportation or to obtain supplies.
Classical G-Band Chromosomal Analysis
Cytogenetic interpretation provided. A computer generated karyotype provided with each study.
