Sub ID - Substance Identification


This test is available to providers to assist in the diagnosis of a substance abuse disorder. This test is indicated when suspicious material is discovered which could be a controlled substance. Items typically submitted include: a) powders, b) pills (no markings), c) drug paraphernalia, d) syringes, e) plant material, f) foodstuffs (marijuana brownie or other edible), and g) liquids which smell of alcohol or which may have been spiked with a drug.

Do not use this test if you suspect that a controlled pharmaceutical prescription material may have been tampered with (please see PHARMACEUTICAL TAMPERING, SUSPECTED).

Please submit a letter of instruction with each request and indicate who is to be billed for the service and who is to receive the report.

Due to the likelihood that the substance may be controlled, only individuals with a DEA license for controlled substances can request this test.

Specimen Collection Requirements


Call 503-413-5295, Legacy Toxicology Client Services, before sending to make sure the substance can be tested.


Syringes with needles will not be accepted. Potential controlled substances must be submitted by an individual with a DEA controlled substance license - typically pharmacy or physician.

Enzyme Immunoassay, Gas Chromatography – Flame Ionization Detector, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry 

Reference Values


Upon receipt, forward specimen to the Toxicology department.

Specimen will be ordered and reported through the Forensic LIMS.
