To collect the specimen, use a syringe rinsed with 0.5 mL of preservative free sodium heparin (1,000 U.S.P. units). Expel the aspirate into a sodium heparin tube (dark green top) or into transport media formulated for cytogenetic tissue culture application.
Do not refrigerate, freeze, expose to extreme temperatures. Keep specimen at ambient temperature and transport the same day or always within 24 hours. Maintain sterility, do not split specimen or open tubes. See Cytogenetics, Flow Cytometry and FISH Specimens for Leukemia, Lymphoma and Other Oncology Referrals.
