Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Air dried slides, sterile swab or collection container of nasal, sputum secretion or stool.

Handling

Nasal, sputum and stool slides: gently roll swab across slide, making a thin but visible layer, air dry. Indicate the specimen source on the requisition or order.

Preferred Volume

Nasal, Sputum: 2 air-dried slides or 1 sterile swab. Stool: 2 air-dried slides or 1.0 gm (walnut size) stool

Minimum Volume

Nasal, Sputum: 1 air-dried slide or 1 sterile swab. Stool: 1 air-dried slide or 0.5 gm stool

Transport

Nasal, Sputum: Room temperature or refrigerated (2-8°C), Stool: Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Frozen samples or slides, slides received in cytology fixative, broken slides, no specimen on slides or swab.

Stability

Room Temperature: Nasal, Sputum secretion or swab 24 hours, slide 7 days; Refrigerated (2-8°C): Nasal, Sputum secretion or swab 24 hours, Slide 7 days, Stool 24 hours or Stool Slide 7 days
